Google site as a learning platform

During this period in my studies we walked through different group working and teaching methods. We practiced by teaching  to a group of 6 people a chosen method or a skill by using a chosen teaching method. Afterwords everyone's part was evaluated by the group.

I decided to teach others what is a QR code and how it could be used in learning and teaching. I created a Google site for this purpose. It's a good way to collect all the information and material related to a certain study module or issue to one place. There you're able to attach all the learning tasks, instructions and share information during the period. Created site can be open to everyone or in use of a certain group only.

The learning task consisted of 8 different parts:

• prework (to install QR code reader into own mobile device)
• start discussion (to find out what did group knew about QR-codes)
• what is a QR-code - discussion
• what is a QR-code reader, how to read a QR-code - practical training
• what kind of information can be attached behind the QR-code
• how to create a QR-code - practical training
• using QR-codes in teaching and learning - brainstorming
• evaluation

This learning session was held via AdobeConnect environment, which worked quite well in this kind of case. Our group was active. My presence via camera was also an important issue. People felt that I was there with them more closely.

Opettajan oppimispolkua rakentamassa - Building a learning path for a teacher

Opintojen puitteissa seurasin syksyn aikana opetusta sekä peruskoulussa että ammatillisissa opinnoissa. Mukana oli luokkaopetusta ja verkko-opetusta sekä Moodlen avulla että käyttäen avoimessa ympäristössä tuotettua nettisivustoa ja Adobe Connect Pro -verkkokokoussovellusta.

Mitä opin:

• aseta tavoite -> suunnittele -> toteututa = palastele ja kokoa
• ota huomioon oppijoiden taustat ja lähtötaso
• valmistaudu
• visualisoi
• havainnollista esimerkein
• rajaa
• jaa ja ota vastaan; oppijoilta voi myös oppia
• Ja tärkeintä kaikessa: Ole oma itsesi!

Oppija on kuin kukkasipuli. Tarvitaan aikaa kasvaa ja kehittyä ja ottaa asioita oikeassa vaiheessa käyttöön. Niin myös opettajopiskelijalla. Opetusharjoittelu jatkuu Mobiilistin HAMK-mobiilipajoissa kevään aikana.


During autumn my studies have included following the teaching situations both in elementary school and HAMK University of Applied Sciences. These included teaching in a traditional class environment like also web-based learning in Moodle environment and also by using Adobe Connect Pro web conferencing solution with internet sites created by Google sites.


What did I learn:

• set a clear goal -> plan -> implement = create a project breakdown and compile
• take into account learners' backgrounds and starting levels
• prepare properly
• visualize
• give examples
• limit
• disseminate and assimilate (also from learners)
• Be Yourself!

A learner is like a flower bulb. There is needed time to grow, develop and take the learned things into use in a correct phase. This is also a case concerning the learner in a professional teacher education program. Teaching practice will continue in Mobiilisti HAMK mobile workshops during the spring.

Innostusta ja Ennakkoluuloja - Enthusiasm and Prejudice

Teimme Mobiilisti-hankkeen puitteissa HAMKin opiskelijoille syksyllä kyselyn, jolla kartoitimme heidän mobiililaitteiden käyttöään sekä yleisesti että oppimisessa. Tulokset osoittivat, että älypuhelin löytyy jo lähes puolelta vastaajista. Osa opiskelijoista oli innolla ottamassa mobiililaitteita mukaan opetukseen ja heillä oli myös paljon ideoita siitä, miten laitteita voisi hyödyntää. Osalla taas asenne oli täysin päinvastainen.

Mobiilien esteitä - Obstacles

Kynnyskysymykseksi mobiilien käytöstä oppimisessa opiskelijoilla nousivat mobiililaitteiden ja -palveluiden kalleus sekä yleinen asenne laitteita ja yleensä teknisiä vempaimia kohtaan. Varmasti osasyy on se, että laitteita ei välttämättä osata käyttää tarkoituksenmukaisesti eikä tiedetä, mitä mahdollisuuksia oman laitteen uumenista löytyy.


Korjataksemme tilannetta järjestämme HAMKissa tammikuussa Kännykällä kätevästi -päiviä, joissa meiltä Mobiilistilaisilta saa tulla kysymään mitä vaan mobiiliuteen ja esimerkiksi kustannuksiin ja mobiilisovelluksiin liittyen. Niiden jatkeena käynnistyvät helmikuussa sekä opiskelijoille että opettajille suunnatut mobiilityöpajat, joissa perehdytään tarkemmin erilaisiin käyttötapoihin ja mobiililaitteiden hyödyntämiseen oppimisessa. Opettajille on lisäksi tarjolla paja, jossa työstetään heidän omia opintojaksojaan.

During Autumn 2011 Mobiilisti -project run at the HAMK University of Applied Sciences a survey concerning the usage of mobile devices by students. The results show that nearly half of the students have already a smartphone. Part of the students showed enthusiasm to use their smartphones in learning and in their studies and they also had a lot of ideas how to advantage them in practice. On the contrary, some part had totally opposite attitude towards the mobile devices and technology in general.

Mobiilien mahdollisuuksia - Possibilities

Main obstacles for using own mobile devices in their studies students took up the high costs of devices and services related to them. Likewise also the general attitude and prejudice towards mobile devices and in general all technical equipment was also a significant fact. Certainly also one reason is that people don't know how to use their mobile devices appropriately and what kind of functions and applications there is available.


To help this situation in HAMK will be arranged during January Mobile days, where Mobiilisti -project members are available to answer to all of questions related to the mobile devices and for example to the mobile costs and mobile applications. As a continuation to the Mobile days will be arranged Mobile workshops starting from the February. These are available both for students and teachers. In Mobile workshops will be familiarized with the different mobile use cases and how to utilize mobile devices in learning and teaching. In the last workshop in April will be worked especially to develop teachers' own study modules.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 -kokemuksia - Experiencing New Galaxy Tab 10.1

Sain käyttööni uuden Galaxy Tab 10.1 -laitteen. Laitteessa on siis Android -käyttöjärjestelmä. Tässä kerättynä ensikokemuksia.


Fyysisesti laitteen näyttö on suurempi kuin edellisessä (aiempi oli 7"), mistä on luonnollisesti hyötyä. Laite itsessään on ohut ja painoltaan samaa luokkaa edellisen kanssa. Pienempi laite oli näppärämpi pidellä käsissä ja kahdella kädellä kirjoittaminen onnistui helposti. Nyt se on hiukan haastavampaa silloin, kun laitetta pitää vaakasuunnassa, jolloin se on käsissä varsin leveä. Käsilaukkuun tablet vielä mahtuu. Ulkonäkö on linjakas ja tyylikäs.


Lähdin asentamaan laitetta kuntoon. Näillä sovelluksilla rakensin oman laite- ja oppimisympäristöni:

• Lisäksi kaikki oleelliset pelit on asenneltu (Angry Birdsista ja AirPenguinista alkaen)

Laitteen toimintalogiikka poikkeaa hiukan edellisestä, joten sen kanssa sinuiksi tulemiseen meni hetken aikaa. Lapsilta tämä näytti sujuvan varsin nopeasti.

Pitkällä kotinapin painalluksella saa edelleen näkymän aktiivisista sovelluksista. Uutta on se, että ne voi myös sulkea samasta näkymästä. Laitteesta löytyy myös liikkeentunnistukseen perustuvia toimintoja. Kallistelemalla voi pienentää tai suurentaa näyttöä sekä siirtää sovelluksia näkymästä toiseen.


Kuvan laatu on hyvä, Videokuvaustakin olen jo testannut ja hyvältä näyttää. Laite on selkeästi suunniteltu myös vaakasuorassa käytettäväksi (Samsung-teksti) pitkällä sivulla), joten se ohjaa hyvin käyttämään laitetta oikein päin juuri videokuvauksessa.


I took into use a new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 which has Android operating system. Here you can find my first impressions.

The device display is larger than in previous one I had in use (that was 7") and this is a clear advantage. The device itself is really thin and the wight is about the same with the old one. Smaller tablet was handier from the size point of view and writing with it by two hand in use was easier. With this new one writing with two hand is more challenging when the device is used horizontally. I'm still able to put it into my handbag anyway. The outlook of the device is stylish.

At first I installed into my device all needed apps to build my own learning environment:

• WLAN settings were set
• Email and Calendar sync was enabled via settings:
• Gmail: Work and private related email
• Groupwise (via Microsoft Exchange Active Sync): Work related email
• Social media apps:
• Facebook for Android: Both for work and private purposes; sharing information
• Twitter: Both for work and private purposes; sharing information
• Foursquare: Sharing location and places
• LinkedIn: Professional network
• Meeting, connections:
• Skype: Work related meetings and chat
• AdobeConnect: Work related meeting where larger group of participants
• Documenting:
• Google docs: All work related and private documents
• ColorNote (Yellow stickers): Short notes
• Bambuser (Video streaming): For documenting and sharing occasions and events online
• Blogger: Writing blog texts; adding photos and videos
• Other apps:
• SportsTracker: Getting routes into maps with photos taken
• QR Droid: QR code reader
• Dropbox: For sharing and moving big files
• AndroMedia Video Editor: For making own videos (photos, videos, texts, speecs, background music)
• There were some apps already installed, which I use actively: Camera, Videos, Gallery, Googlemaps, YouTube, Internet browser, Latitude, Memo, Calendar
• I'm testing this one:
• Maverick: Off-road GPS navigator with offline maps support, compassa and track recording. 
• I also installed some relevant games starting from AngryBirds and AirPenguin.

This new tablet has a bit different UI logics than the previous one. It took some time to familiarize with that. For kids it took only a really short time.

When you long-press Home-button, there is still opened a list of active applications. Great new functionality is that, you can also close the apps from that list. New feature is also the motion based functionality. By tilting and panning you're able to reduce and enlarge screen or move icons to another page.

I'm satisfied with the photo and video quality. The tablet has been clearly designed to be used especially horizontally (Samsung -logo on the long side). That guides the user to use the device right way when taking videos.

Pedagogiikkaa mobiilioppimisen tueksi - in mobile learning mPedagogy is in a key role

Takana on nyt kaksi ensimmäistä kolmesta kasvatustieteen perusopintoihin kuuluvista opintojaksoista. Pedagogiikan termistön osaaminen on laajentunut eksponentiaalisesti ja tekniikkahörhö insinööri saa oikeita sanoja käyttöönsä osittain jo tutuillekin asioille. Verkko-opetuksen kirja odottaa vielä osittain loppuunlukemista ja ensi vuoden aikana on tulossa opintojaksoja liittyen sitten tarkemmin opintokokonaisuuksien suunnitteluun.

Mobiilisti-hankkeessa on myös oppia tullut. mPedagogiikka on tullut tutummaksi Silanderin Pasin opastuksen (workshop1, workshop2) myötä ja internetissä on tullut kahlattua kaikennäköistä materiaalia.

Täytyy todeta, että tästä kaikesta on kyllä hurjasti hyötyä mobiiliopetusta kehittäessä. On jotain, mistä kaivaa kättä pidempää, kun omat keinot loppuvat.

First two of three study modules of my pedagogical studies has been now completed. My vocabulary concerning the pedagogy terminology has grown exponentially. As an engineer who is extremely interested in all kind of technical equipment and mobile devices, I've found correct words to be used for the partly familiar things. I'm still in the middle of reading a great book related to the eLearning and during next year the studies will include study modules for building modules for real students.

In MobiLearn project (Mobiilisti) I have also learned a lot concerning the pedagogy. Mobile pedagogy (mPedagogy) has been familiarized in guidance of Pasi Silander and I have also actively browsed the internet.

I have to admit that this all has and will be very useful when developing mobile learning. When my own skills aren't enough, at least I know where to find more information.

Kävin kokemassa kuun vaihteessa Online Educa Berlin -konferenssin. Tapahtumassa oli sekä konferenssiesityksiä että yritysten standeja.

Mobiilioppijalle tapahtuma jo sinänsä oli avaava kokemus. Taltioitavaa oli paljon ja Samsung Galaxy Tabin kamera ja muistiinpanosovellukset olivatkin aktiivisessa käytössä. Myös AVO-hankkeen ja FLFn yhteisellä standilla tuli aina välillä oltua passissa jakaen mainoksia ja keskustellen kävijöiden kanssa. Tarttuipa haaviin muutamia mobiilioppimisen parissa töitä tekeviä ulkomaalaisiakin.

Konferenssissakin kyllä mobiilioppimisesta puhuttiin, mutta käytännön esimerkit olivat vähissä. Mielestäni Suomessa ollaan jo varsin pitkällä mobiilioppimisen kehittämisessä ja kokeiluissa, kun vertaa siihen, mitä tuolta jäi haaviin. Nyt on meillä suomalaisilla jälleen kerran näytön paikka. Meiltä löytyy osaamista ja ympäri Suomea kehitetään mobiilimenetelmiä.

Ja se WiFi eli WLAN! Konferenssimateriaaleissa oli hyvin kyllä kerrottu, mitkä ovat tunnukset langattomaan verkkoon. Paikan päällä verkko ei sitten juurikaan toiminut kuin kaikkein kauimmaisissa esityssaleissa. Liekö verkon kapasiteetti ollut sitten liian alhainen? Mobiililaitteita ja kannettavia tietokoneita kun oli käytössä lähes jokaisella esitysten aikana. Taidan olla täällä kotimaassa  tottunut jo liiankin hyviin palveluihin.

I experienced 1.-2.12. Online Educa Berlin 2011 conference and found there both interesting presentations and stands.


This was a broadening experience for a mobile learner. There was a huge amount of information to be documented and I used Samsung Galaxy Tab camera and note apps actively. I also were on call in a shared stand of AVO-project and FLF distributing adverts and discussing with visitors. I even found some people working in the area of mobile learning.


There was a lot of discussion about moble learning but a lot of less practical experiences were shared. In my opinion we are much more advanced in developing and piloting mobile learning in practise. Now we just need to shout it out. We have a lot of know-how to share with others.


And the Wifi network! The password was very clearly printed into the conference material but the wireless network hardly worked in the farthest conference rooms. May be the network capacity was too low? Nearly every participant used mobile devices and laptops during the event. I might be to used to well working services.
